DENVER DANCE COMPANY RECEIVES NEA AWARD

SPEAKING OF DANCE receives award from the National Endowment for the Arts for conflict resolution seminar
Denver, Colorado — SPEAKING OF DANCE has been given a special award by the National Endowment for the Arts in recognition of SOD's community dance work. SOD is one of ten organizations nationwide to receive a technical assistance award to host and participate in a seminar on Conflict Resolution Education in the Arts. The seminar will take place in Denver in August 2001.

Since 1998, SPEAKING OF DANCE's main community program in the Denver area has been "Building Community Through Dance," an intergenerational program of free dance workshops. Building Community Through Dance has been a highly popular and successful means of strengthening community bonds through communal dancemaking. Over 350 children and adults have participated in the program since its inception. Through this program, we are able to use our art to help children and adults learn to be more articulate communicators, better group decision-makers, and more responsible individuals. Participants learn to mentor one another, both in art making and in related life skills. A very diverse group of participants has been able to create a unified, caring community.
The seminar will conducted by representatives from the National Center for Conflict Resolution Education. Among the other national organizations to receive the grant are the Brooklyn Children's Museum, the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, and the Merit School of Music, Chicago.
